Integrative Medicine Treatment in Thyroid disease: A Pilot Service Program

Integrative Medicine Treatment in Thyroid disease: A Pilot Service Program

Integrative Medical Centre, Hong Kong Institute of Integrative Medicine

Faculty of Medicine, CUHK

Thyroid dysfunction is one of the most common endocrine diseases, among which hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and goiter are the most common. Thyroid dysfunction has higher prevalence in women.

The thyroid is an endocrine gland located in the front of the neck. It produces thyroid hormones that regulate various vital metabolic processes in human body. Excessive secretion of thyroxine can lead to hyperthyroidism. Patients will have symptoms such as heart palpitations, weight loss, tremor, protruding eyes, hyperactivity, insomnia, diarrhea, etc. Insufficient secretion of thyroxine results in hypothyroidism, which can cause bradycardia, weight gain, delayed reaction, depression, fatigue and constipation. Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can result in enlarged thyroid gland or thyroid nodules, which not only affects the appearance, but also causing a psychological pressure on patients.

The Western medical treatment for thyroid disorders nowadays is mainly based on anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine therapy or surgery. On the other hand, many recent clinical studies have supported that, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion can be combined with western medicine treatment at different stages, which can help stabilize the level of thyroxine, reduce the side effects of western medicine, or reduce the chance of recurrence of hyperthyroidism.

If you encounter the following conditions when receiving Western medicine in treating thyroid dysfunction, you can consider joining this program, to achieve the best therapeutic effect by taking advantages of both Western and Chinese medicine.

Hyperthyroidism

1. The effects of long-term medications have been shown to be mediocre or stopping medication causes recurrence of disease.
2. Laboratory results are normal or partly normal, but clinical symptoms such as protruding eyes, swollen neck , palpitations, irritability, irregular menstruation, etc. remain.
3. Taking western medication causes side effects, such as joint pain, itchy skin, hair loss, and even WBC deficiency.
4. Those who are not suited to western medication, radioactive iodine therapy and surgical treatment methods due to age or other health reasons.

HypothyroidismLaboratory results are normal or partly normal, but clinical symptoms such as delayed reaction, depression, fatigue, and constipation remain.
GoiterThe tumor or nodules have been excluded from malignancy, with its size has not reached the surgical criteria and only clinical observation is needed.

Hyperthyroidism belongs to the category of "Goiter Qi癭氣" in traditional Chinese medicine. It is mostly related to the stagnation of qi, blood stasis, and phlegm fire on the front of the neck due to yin deficiency and fire hyperactivity. Hypothyroidism is equivalent to the " Asthenic Disease" of traditional Chinese medicine. It is mostly caused by insufficient yang qi in the spleen and kidney, and it also suffers from pathogens such as fluid retention, phlegm turbidity, and blood stasis. Goiter is a kind of "Ying Liu癭瘤 " in traditional Chinese medicine. It has a variety of forms, and mostly caused by depression and improper dietary preference that unregulated the qi of the liver and spleen, resulting in the stagnation of qi, phlegm and blood stasis on the front of the neck.

Integrative Medical Centre is launching ‘Integrative Medicine Treatment in Thyroid disease: A Pilot Service Programme’.
