CUHK LAW GBA Forum Seminar Series 2023 – "Attributing Criminal Liability in the Murky Waters of Self-driving Cars in GBA"

The CUHK LAW Greater Bay Area (GBA) Forum Seminar Series offers a platform for the exchange of ideas, views and visions amongst academics and members of the legal professions in relation to legal aspects of the GBA. In 2023, the seminar series had discussed the following three topics: "Future of the GBA Legal Market", "Competition Law in the GBA", and "The Application of the CISG in the GBA".

The next online seminar, "Attributing Criminal Liability in the Murky Waters of Self-driving Cars in GBA", will be delivered by CUHK LAW Professor Michelle MIAO on 29 May 2023.

How is criminal liability attributed when severe injuries and deaths occur in the context of "self-driving"? This seminar addresses thorny legal and ethical issues stemming from approportionating liability between humans and machines in the grey zone of partially autonomous vehicles. With a special attention to the GBA area, it examines the status quo of liability distribution from a comparative perspective and reveals challenges posed to the existing Chinese legal framework(s) when accountability issues arise from a shared mode of driving controlled by human actors and AI algorithms.
